All 5 Elder Sphinxes of Hexhaven, Ranked

Reality Fracture's founding council of Hexhaven arrived as five legendary Elder Sphinxes, each in a different two-colour identity. We rank all five by early deck count data — least to most popular — with a bonus entry for the sphinx that made the whole tribe Commander-viable.

Hexhaven is the great library of sphinxes, an institution of collected knowledge that predates every empire depicted in Reality Fracture's story. Its founding council — five elder sphinxes, each representing one of the allied colour pairs that sustain the library's neutrality — were revealed as five mythic legendary creatures across the set. They share a creature type, a flavour context, and a price point, but diverge sharply in how they play and, it turns out, in how many players are building them.

The early numbers are already in and the results are not what most players expected. The Dimir combo sphinx sits dead last. The infect sphinx leads the field. Below, all five ranked from least to most popular, with full playstyle breakdowns, links to the dedicated Commander guides, and a bonus entry for The Ur-Sphinx — not a Hexhaven elder, but the reason sphinx tribal exists in Commander at all.

Dimir · U/B · Reality Fracture
Uldaros Theorix
Every clone fills the grave. Every grave feeds the next clone.
3UBB · 6 CMC 5/5 · Flying Self-Mill Engine Clone Combo
329
Decks Built

The most surprising entry on this list. Uldaros Theorix pairs two of Dimir's most popular archetypes — self-mill and clone spells — into a recursive engine where clone spells mill three cards each and milled creatures spawn token copies that mill three more. Syr Konrad, the Grim converts every mill ping into damage; Thassa's Oracle and Laboratory Maniac win once the library is empty. On paper, this should be Dimir players' dream commander. In practice, the six-mana cost and the setup time required before the loop becomes self-sustaining are keeping early adoption low. Expect these numbers to climb as players identify the right ramp package.

Azorius · W/U · Reality Fracture
Denzilore Fatehold
Every glance at the future makes your army unstoppable.
1WUU · 4 CMC 3/4 · Flash · Flying Scry Engine Counter Accumulation
1,064
Decks Built

Denzilore Fatehold is the most technically demanding of the five sphinxes and rewards players willing to read their deck carefully. Every scry and surveil event puts a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control: not just one creature, all of them. The incremental counter accumulation is rapid once dedicated scry engines are in play — Sigiled Starfish, Sphinx of Foresight, and Elminster generate free scries every turn. Herald of Secret Streams makes the entire countered board unblockable. The Mystic Speculation buyback loop closes games in a single turn cycle once it is online. Denzilore's position near the bottom reflects the patience the deck demands in the early game, not any lack of ceiling once assembled.

Kwia Vigorbloom
Every life gained is a seed. Every seed becomes an army.
3GWW · 6 CMC 3/4 · Flying · Lifelink Lifegain Engine Token Flood
1,122
Decks Built

Kwia Vigorbloom taps into one of Commander's most consistently popular archetypes: lifegain into tokens into counters into overwhelming combat. Once each turn, whenever you gain life, create a 1/1 Saproling token. Whenever a creature token enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control. The "once each turn" clause prevents infinite loops with Soul Warden-type creatures, but even one trigger per turn cycle compounds rapidly when Archangel of Thune is also in play, loading counters onto every creature each time life is gained. Felidar Sovereign and Aetherflux Reservoir provide clean alternate win conditions. At six mana, Kwia asks for ramp investment but rewards patience with a game state that is very hard to race once established.

Gruul · R/G · Reality Fracture
Aerid Konstrari
Clone the best thing on the board. Every copy grows the hoard.
2RG · 4 CMC 5/4 · Flying · Trample Clone Engine Artifact Token Ramp
1,190
Decks Built

Aerid Konstrari generates a Heartwood artifact token whenever a creature token copy enters the battlefield under your control — and this deck is built to flood the board with creature token copies at every opportunity. Delina, Wild Mage, Esix, Fractal Bloom, and Sylvan Offering all produce waves of token copies; Academy Manufactor turns each Heartwood trigger into a Food and a Clue as well, tripling every event. Hellkite Tyrant wins the game outright on your upkeep once you reach twenty or more artifacts. Aerid's strong second-place finish is likely driven by how quickly it produces a visible, dramatic board state — Gruul players tend to prefer commanders that do something loud, fast, and hard to ignore, and Aerid delivers that in the first three turns after it lands.

Rakdos · B/R · Reality Fracture
Ingris Stingerquill
Every creature that attacks is a needle. Every needle carries poison.
BRR · 3 CMC 1/4 · Flying Infect Swarm Token Generator
1,347
Decks Built

Nobody predicted the infect sphinx would top the chart, but the early data is clear: Ingris Stingerquill is the most-built elder sphinx from Reality Fracture. The likely reason is the mana cost. At three mana — one black, two red — Ingris arrives earlier than any other elder sphinx and immediately begins dealing 1 damage to each opponent for every attacking creature. With infect creatures and the right density of token production, a turn-four wide attack deals 3-4 poison counters to the whole table simultaneously. Solphim, Mayhem Dominus doubles that to 6-8 in a single swing. Players who enjoy aggressive strategies that end games decisively have found exactly what they wanted here, social contract concerns and all.

The Ur-Sphinx
The original. The archetype. The reason Sphinx tribal exists in Commander.
6WUB · 9 CMC 10/10 · Flying · Eminence Sphinx Tribal Eminence Mill
1,404
Decks Built

The Ur-Sphinx is not one of the five Hexhaven elders, but it arrives in the Reality Fracture Commander precon and tops this bonus entry for good reason: with 1,404 registered decks it already outpaces even Ingris Stingerquill. Its Eminence ability discounts every Sphinx spell you cast by two mana, even from the command zone, meaning the entire Reality Fracture elder sphinx suite becomes cheaper the moment The Ur-Sphinx is your commander. Its attack trigger mills each opponent for two cards and lets you cast spells from any library until end of turn, creating a premium recast engine on a 9-mana 10/10 body that closes games decisively once it connects. If any of the five Hexhaven founders inspire you to build Sphinx tribal rather than their specific archetype, The Ur-Sphinx is where that build starts.
