Overview

The Ur-Sphinx's most underrated quality is that you do not need to cast it to benefit from it. Eminence — the ability that reduces the cost of every other Sphinx spell by one generic mana — operates from the command zone. The deck's entire roster of 34 Sphinxes arrives cheaper from turn one, regardless of whether The Ur-Sphinx is on the battlefield. A commander that generates value before it costs a single mana is rare; The Ur-Sphinx does it continuously, for every Sphinx drawn across the whole game.

The attack trigger is where the deck shifts from value engine to game-ending machine. Whenever one or more Sphinxes attack, each player mills that many cards. The Ur-Sphinx then allows you to cast any card milled from any player's library without paying its mana cost. A squad of five Sphinxes mills five from each opponent and hands you free access to the best card in each player's top five. Against control opponents you cast their permission. Against combo opponents you cast their pieces. Against aggro opponents you cast their threats back at them. The effect scales directly with the number of Sphinxes attacking, and Roaming Throne doubles it entirely.

The supporting shell is Esper control built to survive until the engine assembles. Mana Drain, Counterspell, Dovin's Veto, Swan Song, and Arcane Denial protect the stack. Kindred Dominance clears the board of everything that is not a Sphinx. Rise of the Dark Realms and Reanimate recover from graveyards the milling has filled. Smothering Tithe generates Treasure to fuel the high-mana curve. The overall package is a threat-dense control deck that wins through accumulated card advantage and a combat trigger with no ceiling.

Roaming Throne Roaming Throne

Roaming Throne is an Artifact Creature with every creature type simultaneously. When it enters the battlefield, you choose a creature type: name Sphinx. From that point forward, triggered abilities of Sphinx creatures you control trigger an additional time each turn.

The Ur-Sphinx's combat trigger reads "whenever one or more Sphinxes you control attack." With Roaming Throne on the battlefield naming Sphinx, this trigger fires twice per attack step. The two triggers resolve sequentially: the first mills each player and offers you free casts from the milled cards; then the second mills again from where the library left off and offers another round of free casts. Five Sphinxes attacking produces two triggers of five, milling ten cards from each opponent and offering up to ten free casts from each player's library — per attack step.

Roaming Throne also doubles every other Sphinx trigger in the deck. Kindred Discovery draws two cards instead of one for each Sphinx that enters or attacks. Windreader Sphinx draws two cards each time any Sphinx attacks. Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign generates two Fact or Fiction selections for each Sphinx entering. The entire engine doubles in value from a single four-mana artifact.

Result: Against three opponents with five Sphinxes attacking, one combat step mills thirty cards from the table and offers up to thirty free casts. Even at a modest three Sphinxes, six triggers across three opponents mills eighteen cards and generates eighteen potential free spells per attack. Roaming Throne is the highest-leverage card in the deck after The Ur-Sphinx itself.

Key Cards

Consecrated Sphinx
Draw Engine · Tribal Anchor
Whenever an opponent draws a card, you draw two. In a Commander game where opponents cycle through spells and draw for turn, Consecrated Sphinx can draw eight or more cards in a single rotation around the table. It costs five mana rather than six under Eminence, arrives with flying and a 4/7 body, and counts toward The Ur-Sphinx's attack trigger milling. Protecting it at all costs is worth the investment.
Kindred Discovery
Tribal Draw Engine · Value Multiplier
Name Sphinx. Now draw a card whenever a Sphinx enters the battlefield under your control, and again whenever a Sphinx attacks. With 34 Sphinxes in the deck, Eminence reducing their costs throughout the game, and every combat step producing a second draw trigger, Kindred Discovery consistently draws fifteen or more cards across a single rotation. Combined with Roaming Throne it doubles the attack-step trigger to two cards per attacking Sphinx.
Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign
Tribal Reducer · ETB Value
Reduces the cost of Sphinx spells by two additional mana, stacking with Eminence for a total of three mana off every Sphinx. Whenever a Sphinx enters under your control, reveal the top four cards and an opponent chooses two piles — you take one. On a Sphinx-dense board with Roaming Throne present, each entering Sphinx triggers this twice. The combination of cost reduction and selection makes Unesh the highest-value support creature in the deck.
Kindred Dominance
One-Sided Board Wipe · Finisher Setup
Name Sphinx. Every creature that is not a Sphinx is destroyed. Roaming Throne is a Shapeshifter with every type, so it survives. Every opposing creature — regardless of size, indestructibility, or board state depth — is removed in one sorcery. At seven mana this demands setup, but Smothering Tithe, the full mana rock suite, and Mana Drain's stored mana make seven entirely reachable by turn five or six. Casting it the turn before The Ur-Sphinx attacks is the ideal sequence.

Playing the Deck

The first three turns are for mana. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Talisman of Hierarchy, Fellwar Stone, Thought Vessel, Sapphire Medallion, Herald's Horn, and Urza's Incubator collectively make this a much faster deck than its mana curve suggests. By turn three it is possible to have five or six mana available, which gets a Sphinx like Sphinx of Foresight or Watcher of the Spheres on the battlefield with mana up for a counterspell. Eminence is already active from the command zone; every rock accelerates into a Sphinx that itself costs one less than printed.

The mid game is about building the Sphinx army while holding interaction. Kindred Discovery arriving on turn four or five puts the deck into a sustained draw engine: casting and attacking with Sphinxes refills the hand with each trigger. Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign arriving in this window further reduces costs and turns each new Sphinx into a Fact or Fiction. The counterspell package protects these pieces: hold Mana Drain for whatever threatens Kindred Discovery or Unesh specifically, and let smaller plays resolve. Smothering Tithe during this window generates substantial Treasure off opponent draw spells and ramp, which offsets any mana spent on counters.

The late game opens when The Ur-Sphinx hits the table. The first attack is often the decisive one: even a conservative four-Sphinx squad mills four from each opponent and offers up to twelve free casts at a three-player table. Protect the attack step with Dovin's Veto or Arcane Denial. If the board needs clearing before the first swing, Kindred Dominance empties opponent boards while leaving the Sphinx army untouched. After a milling attack fills multiple graveyards, Rise of the Dark Realms returns everything — all of it — into play under your control.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: Eminence generates value before The Ur-Sphinx costs a single mana, meaning the deck is functional and ahead of curve even when the commander is repeatedly removed. Kindred Discovery, Windreader Sphinx, and Consecrated Sphinx produce enough card draw to keep threats flowing through any amount of disruption. Kindred Dominance answers wide boards decisively without touching the Sphinx army. Rise of the Dark Realms has an effectively unlimited ceiling once the graveyards are stocked through milling. The free-cast window on the attack trigger is one of the highest-value triggers in the format at scale.

Weaknesses: The deck is hurt significantly by graveyard hate that exiles milled cards, which eliminates the free cast pool entirely. The strategy requires assembling several pieces before the attack trigger reaches its full potential — a fast combo deck that wins on turn four ignores the engine entirely. Non-creature permanents are difficult to answer: only Anguished Unmaking and Void Rend handle non-land permanents outside creatures. Strategies that win entirely through enchantments or artifacts (Stax, enchantress combo) require the counterspell suite to hold them off for longer than the deck ideally wants to wait.

Verdict
The Ur-Sphinx is one of the most textured commanders available in Esper. The Eminence discount removes the usual tension of tribal commanders between playing the commander and building the board — here, the discount runs whether The Ur-Sphinx is in play or in the command zone, so the Sphinx army builds at full speed regardless. The attack trigger has no fixed ceiling: every additional Sphinx, every additional opponent, every additional milling attack compounds the number of free casts available, and Roaming Throne doubles the whole equation. This is a deck that rewards patience across the first five turns and delivers one of the most decisive endings available at the format's top end. When it goes off, the table does not get a second turn.
