Abaddon the Despoiler costs {2}{U}{B}{R} and is a 5/5 with trample. During your turn, spells you cast from your hand with mana value X or less have cascade, where X is the total amount of life your opponents have lost this turn. Every point of life lost before you cast a spell makes the next spell cascade.
The precon already has the cascade spells and the Demons, including Keeper of Secrets, Brainstorm, Blood for the Blood God!, Noise Marine and The Lost and the Damned. Each swap below pairs a cut with an add, and every card is scored with the same numbers the Oracle uses to build decks: synergy and inclusion from the Abaddon decks, plus lift, which shows how much more often a card turns up in Abaddon decks than in decks that could play it.

What is holding the deck back
Not enough ways to make opponents lose life
Loyal Subordinate, Boltwave, Stormfist Crusader, Thermo-Alchemist and Rakdos Charm all cost life from the opponents, which raises Abaddon's X before the spell. They are among the top-scoring cards the precon leaves out.
Cheap card advantage and tutors
Ancestral Vision, Profane Tutor and Inevitable Betrayal are suspend spells that are cheap to cast and get cast for free later.
Creatures that do nothing to the life total
Seeker of Slaanesh, Venomcrawler, Helbrute and Knight Rampager do not make opponents lose life, and Assault Suit and Nurgle's Rot are each played in about one Abaddon deck in ten.
The 13 swaps

Loyal Subordinate is a 3/1 Zombie for {2}{B} with menace. Lieutenant: at the beginning of combat on your turn, if you control your commander, each opponent loses 3 life. A three-drop that makes Abaddon's X 3 or more every turn, and the highest-scoring card the precon leaves out.

Nurgle's Rot is a one-mana Aura that returns when the creature dies and makes a Plaguebearer. It is played in about one Abaddon deck in ten.
Ancestral Vision has suspend 4 for {U}. After four of your upkeeps you cast it for free and a player draws three cards. Three cards for one mana, and a cheap free spell for Abaddon's cascade.

Seeker of Slaanesh is a 3/3 haste Demon for {3}{R} that forces opponents to attack. It is played in about one Abaddon deck in nine.

Inevitable Betrayal has suspend 3 for {1}{U}{U}. After three of your upkeeps you cast it for free, and it searches an opponent's library for a creature and puts it onto the battlefield under your control. A creature stolen for three mana.

Bile Blight gives a creature and its copies -3/-3 for {B}{B}. It is played in about one Abaddon deck in eight.
Rakdos, Lord of Riots is a 6/6 flying, trample Demon for {B}{B}{R}{R}. You cannot cast it unless an opponent lost life this turn, and creature spells you cast cost {1} less for each 1 life your opponents have lost this turn. Loyal Subordinate or Stormfist enables it, and it makes the next creature cheap.

Knight Rampager is a five-mana 6/5 trampler that attacks a random opponent. It is played in about one Abaddon deck in eight.
Thermo-Alchemist is a 0/3 Human Shaman with defender for {1}{R}. For a tap it deals 1 damage to each opponent, and it untaps whenever you cast an instant or sorcery. A pinger that raises X every turn.

Rakdos Charm costs {B}{R} at instant speed. Choose one: exile a player's graveyard, destroy an artifact, or each creature deals 1 damage to its controller. The last mode makes every opponent with a creature lose life, and counts for Abaddon's X.

Tallyman of Nurgle is a 2/3 lifelink creature for {2}{B} that draws a card if a creature died this turn. It is played in about one Abaddon deck in eight.
Boltwave costs {R}: it deals 3 damage to each opponent. A one-mana spell that makes X 3 or more before the next spell cascades.

If you want to spend more
These are strong but sit outside a budget upgrade. Prices are the cheapest paper printing.
- Creeping Bloodsucker$5.17
Deals 1 damage to each opponent each upkeep and gains you life.
The Ruinous Powers already has the cascade spells and the Demons. The upgrade is cheap cards that make opponents lose life, and cheap suspend spells, in place of creatures that do nothing to the life total. These thirteen swaps cost about $44 in total.

How the numbers work
Inclusion is the share of Abaddon the Despoiler decks (6,764 of them when this was written, 2026-10-27) that play the card. Synergy is how much more often they play it than other decks in the same colours. Oracle score is synergy × 0.6 plus inclusion × 0.4, the same blend The Oracle uses to rank cards for a deck. Lift compares how often the card appears in these decks with how often it could, capped at 8× here; it is shown for context and does not change the score.
Two cautions. Players who run the precon unmodified count as Abaddon the Despoiler decks, which flatters every card the precon contains. Lift is moderate to high for many of these cards because few decks play them outside a life loss deck, so use lift to compare cards, not to judge one in isolation. Prices are the cheapest non-foil paper printing on TCGplayer (via Scryfall), in USD, and move daily.
