Overview
Coven Counters is a counters deck that rewards a board of creatures with different powers. Leinore, Autumn Sovereign has a coven trigger: at the beginning of combat on your turn, put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature you control, then if you control three or more creatures with different powers, draw a card. Since every counter changes a creature's power, the deck naturally makes coven easier to reach.
The 99 cards are 38 creatures, 6 artifacts, 4 enchantments, 6 instants, 8 sorceries and 37 lands. 26 of the creatures are Humans, so tribal payoffs such as Kyler, Sigardian Emissary, Sigarda, Heron's Grace and Heronblade Elite fit the deck, and many cards have coven abilities, including Dawnhart Wardens, Stalwart Pathlighter and Wall of Mourning. The rest of the deck is full of counters: Juniper Order Ranger, Victory's Envoy, Verdurous Gearhulk and Citadel Siege.
Key Cards
Playing the Deck
The early game is about mana and cheap Humans. Avacyn's Pilgrim, Somberwald Sage, Yavimaya Elder and Gyre Sage help with mana, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Talisman of Unity speed you up, and Knight of the White Orchid, Champion of Lambholt and Stalwart Pathlighter are efficient early creatures. Heronblade Elite gets bigger whenever a Human enters.
The middle of the game is about putting counters on everything and triggering coven. Leinore, Autumn Sovereign adds a counter each combat, Citadel Siege adds two more, Victory's Envoy puts a counter on each other creature each upkeep, and Abzan Falconer and Ainok Bond-Kin give creatures with counters flying and first strike. Dawnhart Wardens and Sigardian Zealot pump the team when coven is on, and Odric, Master Tactician lets you choose how your opponent's creatures block.
The late game is about huge creatures and tokens. Angel of Glory's Rise exiles all Zombies and returns all Human creature cards from your graveyard to the battlefield, Dearly Departed gives Humans extra counters from the graveyard, and Trostani's Summoner and Somberwald Beastmaster make three bodies at once. Biogenic Upgrade adds and doubles counters, Celestial Judgment can keep one creature of each power while destroying the rest, and Cleansing Nova resets the board.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: The deck has a lot of ways to put counters on creatures and draw cards from coven, and Sigarda gives it good protection. It also has strong interaction, such as Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, Return to Dust, Ruinous Intrusion and Unbreakable Formation, and Inspiring Call draws cards for countered creatures.
Weaknesses: Coven needs three different powers, which is harder to reach if your creatures all have the same power, and a board wipe can undo a lot of counters. Many of the best cards are expensive, and it has few ways to protect its creatures beyond Sigarda and a few spells.
