Overview
Food and Fellowship uses two partner commanders to define a playstyle rooted in incremental advantage. Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit becomes a near-unblockable ring-bearer who triggers The Ring Tempts You mechanic with each successful attack, unlocking a cascade of escalating abilities. Sam, Loyal Attendant creates a Food token at the beginning of each combat when Frodo is in play, ensuring a constant supply of sacrificial artifacts that fuel the deck's many payoffs.
The Abzan colour identity brings the best of each colour's token and lifegain support: white provides anthem effects and protection, black adds sacrifice synergies and resilience, and green contributes the mana acceleration and creature density needed to flood the board. At its core, this deck is a value engine disguised as a Food deck. Academy Manufactor turns every Food token into three artifacts simultaneously, and cards like Well of Lost Dreams convert every life gain from Food into additional cards.

Playing the Deck
The early game is about establishing both partner commanders as quickly as possible. Sam comes down first if possible: his Food generation during combat immediately starts stocking the supply. Frodo follows, and once both are in play the deck begins generating a Food token every combat step while Frodo sneaks through as an unblockable ring-bearer. The first few Ring Tempts You triggers accumulate quickly: the ring-bearer gains lifelink, then ward, then a size bonus each time the Ring tempts you.
The mid game escalates when either Academy Manufactor or Samwise Gamgee enters the board. Academy Manufactor in particular is a must-answer threat: opponents who do not kill it immediately will find themselves staring down a board full of Halflings from Peregrin Took, an overflowing supply of Food, and a hand refilled by Well of Lost Dreams. The deck plays at a patient midrange pace, generating more resources each turn and converting those resources into card draw and board presence.
Closing games comes through a combination of Frodo's accumulated ring-bearer bonuses (he eventually becomes a massive lifelinking threat), a wide board of Halfling tokens, and the ability to outlast attrition with green's mana and black's removal. The deck does not need a specific combo to win, but the Academy Manufactor plus sacrifice outlet combination can generate arbitrarily large amounts of life and cards that lead to a natural victory.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: Food and Fellowship has exceptional staying power. The lifegain from Food tokens keeps the deck well above its starting life total against aggressive opponents, and the card draw from Well of Lost Dreams ensures the hand never empties. The partner commander setup means both Frodo and Sam are always available for a combined three mana investment, and the Ring Tempts You triggers on Frodo accumulate passively every time he connects. Academy Manufactor is one of the most broken cards in the Food archetype and its inclusion as a reprint is a significant precon value add.
Weaknesses: The deck is relatively slow in the very early game without Sam or Frodo in play. Against extremely fast combo decks that win before turn six or seven it can struggle to establish its engine in time. The strategy is also transparent: experienced opponents will prioritise killing Academy Manufactor and Sam before the Food engine fully assembles. Black's removal helps defend, but the deck has limited ways to protect its key pieces beyond raw card advantage.
