Overview

Keen Engineering plays out as a storm-adjacent strategy without being a combo deck. Sai converts each artifact you cast into a body, meaning artifact-heavy turns generate both board presence and additional resources. The deck runs a high density of cheap artifacts that each replace themselves in some way — Ichor Wellspring draws when it leaves play, Ornithopter of Paradise provides mana, Aether Spellbomb can bounce a creature — creating a self-sustaining loop of casting, drawing, and casting again.

The payoff layer rewards the artifact count. Master of Etherium and Steel Overseer pump the entire token army. Thopter Spy Network creates an additional Thopter each upkeep and draws cards when creatures connect. Broodstar and Darksteel Juggernaut grow with the artifact count. The deck is at its best on turns when Sai is in play and cheap artifacts are available: the combination of token generation and Sai's sacrifice outlet (pay 2, tap, sac two artifacts: draw a card) means the deck rarely runs out of action.

Key Cards

Steel Overseer
Token Pumper · Artifact Synergy
Each turn it untaps, Steel Overseer distributes +1/+1 counters to every artifact creature you control. In a deck that routinely assembles eight or more Thopter tokens, this turns a battlefield of 1/1 flyers into a lethal air force within two or three untap steps. It is the single fastest way to convert token quantity into lethal power.
Master of Etherium
Variable Threat · Lord Effect
Its power and toughness equal the number of artifacts you control, and it gives other artifact creatures +1/+1. In a deck that treats artifact count as a resource, Master of Etherium reliably arrives as a 10-plus power creature that simultaneously pumps the rest of the board. Opponents cannot ignore it without also conceding significant board advantage.
Thopter Spy Network
Token Engine · Card Draw
Creates a 1/1 Thopter at each upkeep and draws a card whenever one or more artifact creatures deal combat damage. Both abilities compound with Sai's generation: the upkeep Thopter adds to the count for artifact-casting payoffs, while the combat draw reward converts attacks into raw card advantage. It functions as two separate engines in a single enchantment slot.
Master Transmuter
Acceleration · Flexibility
Pay one blue mana, tap, and return an artifact to your hand to put any artifact from your hand into play. This ability sidesteps mana costs entirely on expensive artifacts. In a deck with both cheap and expensive artifacts, it enables turn-four plays that would otherwise require turn eight, while also returning cheap artifacts for re-cast with Sai for additional Thopter tokens.

Playing the Deck

Open by establishing mana through Sol Ring, Ornithopter of Paradise, Silver Myr, and Palladium Myr. The goal is reaching three or four mana by turn three to land Sai and begin the token generation loop. Resist the urge to deploy Sai into an open board with no cheap artifacts available — he demands follow-up to generate value, and casting him into a removal-rich situation before you have mana to recover is the most common early mistake.

The mid game revolves around keeping a hand of cheap artifacts to cast on Sai's turns. Aether Spellbomb, Myr Retriever, and Ichor Wellspring are ideal: each generates value on entering or leaving the battlefield, and each produces a Thopter token with Sai in play. Counterspell, Negate, and Propaganda protect the engine. Use Sai's sacrifice outlet proactively to convert excess 1/1 Thopters into cards whenever you are not actively attacking.

In the late game, the deck wins through overwhelming air presence. Steel Overseer and Master of Etherium turn the token swarm into a legitimate threat. Alternatively, Master Transmuter can deploy Skysovereign or Myr Battlesphere at instant speed on an opponent's end step. All Is Dust functions as a one-sided wrath — it destroys all coloured permanents, leaving your colourless artifacts and tokens intact as the only permanents on the table.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths: The deck generates enormous board presence passively through Sai's token generation and recovers from sweepers quickly by re-casting cheap artifacts. The blue counter package (Counterspell, Negate, Launch Mishap) protects the engine. All Is Dust provides a uniquely powerful sweeper effect that largely spares your own board.

Weaknesses: The deck's power scales with Sai's presence, making it heavily dependent on the commander. Losing Sai to removal multiple times taxes resources and slows the token generation significantly. The deck also has limited life gain and no blockers in the early turns, making aggressive starts from other players a real vulnerability before the token army is established.

Verdict
Keen Engineering delivers a genuinely engaging mono-blue experience that avoids the stereotypical control playstyle in favour of a proactive artifact-storm strategy. The synergies are dense and well-supported, the artifact payoffs scale satisfyingly with the token count Sai generates, and the deck rewards players who understand when to cast and when to hold mana open for interaction. It is an excellent introduction to artifact-based Commander gameplay and a strong foundation for players looking to build toward more powerful blue-artifact lists.
