Overview
Planar Portal is a deck that plays cards from exile. Prosper, Tome-Bound has deathtouch, and at the beginning of your end step he exiles the top card of your library, which you may play until the end of your next turn. Whenever you play a card from exile, you create a Treasure token. Every exile effect in the deck therefore also gives you mana.
The 99 cards are 20 creatures, 14 artifacts, 5 enchantments, 9 instants, 12 sorceries and 39 lands. The deck has a lot of impulse draw, such as Light Up the Stage, Ignite the Future, Commune with Lava, Chaos Channeler, Theater of Horrors and Share the Spoils, and cards that exile opponents' cards for you to play, such as Gonti, Lord of Luxury, Hurl Through Hell, Fiend of the Shadows and Fevered Suspicion. Treasure makers such as Grim Hireling and Bucknard's Everfull Purse turn the extra mana into more plays.
Key Cards
Playing the Deck
The early game is about mana and cheap impulse draw. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Rakdos Signet, Talisman of Indulgence, Mind Stone, Fellwar Stone and Orazca Relic ramp you, and Light Up the Stage, Dark-Dweller Oracle, Dire Fleet Daredevil and Izzet Chemister start generating value. Prosper, Tome-Bound begins exiling cards at the end of your first turn he is on the battlefield.
The middle of the game is about playing from exile and making Treasure. Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Fiend of the Shadows take cards from opponents, Dead Man's Chest lets you cast spells from the top of an opponent's library when the enchanted creature dies, Share the Spoils lets every player play a card from exile, and Piper of the Swarm, Chittering Witch and Ogre Slumlord make Rats that feed your sacrifice effects. Tectonic Giant and Chaos Wand add burn and spell theft.
The late game is about huge flyers and one big turn. Lorcan, Warlock Collector pays life to take creatures from opponents' graveyards, Dream Pillager exiles cards when it connects, Etali, Primal Storm casts free spells whenever it attacks, and Apex of Power exiles seven cards and adds ten mana. Hex, Phthisis, Danse Macabre and Reckless Endeavor clear opposing creatures.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: The deck has a lot of card advantage and mana from Prosper and its exile effects, so it can often cast several spells in a turn. It also has good interaction, including Terminate, Bedevil, Chaos Warp, Hellish Rebuke and Rakdos Charm.
Weaknesses: Cards exiled by Prosper can only be played for a limited time, so the deck can waste them if it does not have mana or the right timing, and it has fewer creatures than most decks. Several of its best cards are expensive, and a lot of its card advantage disappears if Prosper is removed.
