Revenant Recon Commander Precon Guide
Surveil deep. Raise what you find.
Revenant Recon is the Dimir graveyard precon from Murders at Karlov Manor Commander, led by Mirko, Obsessive Theorist. It uses the Surveil mechanic to stack the graveyard with powerful creatures, then reanimates them repeatedly while draining opponents for every card that moves from library to graveyard.

Overview
Revenant Recon is built around the synergy between Surveil and graveyard reanimation. Mirko, Obsessive Theorist triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control: each opponent mills two cards, and then you Surveil 2. This generates a constant stream of Surveil triggers simply by playing the game, stacking both your graveyard and opponents' graveyards with every land drop. The drain effect on opponents through milling compounds over a long game, creating a dual-axis strategy of value and attrition.
The deck leverages Surveil's ability to select precisely which cards go to the graveyard, setting up devastating reanimation targets while filtering away cards that are less useful in the current game state. A single land drop with Mirko in play both fills your graveyard with the creature you want to reanimate and depletes opponents' libraries. The reanimation suite then retrieves those targets repeatedly, and Syr Konrad the Grim punishes every creature that enters and leaves the graveyard, turning the whole engine into a drain clock.
Key Cards
Syr Konrad, the Grim
Drain Engine · Graveyard Payoff
Whenever another creature dies or is put into a graveyard from anywhere, or leaves a graveyard, each opponent loses 1 life. Syr Konrad is the deck's primary win condition: every creature Mirko mills goes to an opponent's graveyard (triggering Konrad), every creature you reanimate leaves your graveyard (triggering Konrad), and every creature that dies in combat triggers Konrad again. In a deck generating continuous Surveil and reanimation loops, Konrad drains the table by 10 or more life every single turn without any additional setup.
Reanimate
Reanimation · Turn-One Power
For one black mana, put any creature from any graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. The life loss equals the creature's mana value. Reanimate is the gold standard of reanimation spells and a genuine power card in this precon: it retrieves the biggest threat in any graveyard at any point in the game for a single mana, enabling turn-two or turn-three reanimation of Mirko's milled targets. The deck's Surveil engine fills both your graveyard and opponents', meaning Reanimate frequently has multiple excellent targets available.
Dimir Charm
Modal Instant · Flexibility
A two-mana instant with three modes: counter a sorcery, destroy a creature with power 2 or less, or look at the top three cards of target library and put one on the bottom. In a Surveil deck, the third mode becomes a form of targeted Surveil that can disrupt opponents' draw steps, burying their best topdecked card beneath two cards. The counterspell mode handles wraths and tutors. The creature removal hits stax pieces and hatebears. Dimir Charm's flexibility makes it a reliable reactive tool throughout every phase of the game.
Whispering Madness
Wheel Effect · Cipher
Each player discards their hand and draws that many cards, then is encoded onto a creature you control. Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player, you may cast the copy for free. Whispering Madness serves two functions: it refills a depleted hand while forcing opponents to discard creatures that Syr Konrad will trigger on, and once ciphered it generates recurring card draw every time the encoded creature connects. In a deck with unblockable or evasive creatures, the cipher trigger fires repeatedly without additional mana investment.
Playing the Deck
The early game is about ramping to Mirko while establishing a light disruption package. Dimir mana rocks let Mirko arrive on turn three or four, and the moment he lands the Surveil engine begins running automatically with every land drop. Early Surveil triggers from other sources (Thoughtseize, Notion Rain) should be used to place the best reanimation targets directly into the graveyard before the first major reanimation spell is cast.
Syr Konrad is the pivotal mid-game deployment. Once he resolves alongside a functioning Surveil loop, every land drop becomes a three-step drain: Mirko mills opponents (triggering Konrad), you Surveil creatures into your graveyard, and then Reanimate or Animate Dead retrieves a target, triggering Konrad again when it leaves the graveyard. A three-land turn with Mirko and Konrad in play can drain all three opponents for six or more life simultaneously.
The late game is a war of attrition that the deck is well-positioned to win. Opponents who have been milled into their graveyard by Mirko's triggers have fewer cards to work with, and those whose graveyard has been built up by Surveil become targets for additional reanimation spells. Whispering Madness ciphered onto an unblockable creature generates fresh cards every turn while forcing opponents to cycle through and expose new graveyard targets.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: Revenant Recon runs its engine automatically. Mirko's trigger fires every land drop, meaning no mana or card slots need to be devoted to Surveiling beyond simply playing lands. The deck includes genuine constructed-power cards: Reanimate, Syr Konrad, and Whispering Madness are all legitimate threats at high-powered tables. Graveyard recursion makes the deck resilient to single removal spells.
Weaknesses: The deck folds to graveyard hate. Leyline of the Void, Rest in Peace, or any effect that exiles graveyards wholesale strips the deck of its primary resource. Mirko requires lands to trigger, meaning slow hands without ramp are vulnerable to being outpaced. The milling of opponents can inadvertently help graveyard-based opponents by filling their own yard.
Verdict
Revenant Recon is the strongest precon from Murders at Karlov Manor Commander in terms of raw power. Mirko's engine runs for free with each land drop, Syr Konrad converts every graveyard movement into drain damage, and the reanimation suite includes the best single-mana reanimation spell ever printed. The deck upgrades exceptionally well with additional Surveil payoffs and cheaper reanimation targets, and even out of the box it presents a credible threat at most Commander tables. Players who enjoy graveyard manipulation and incremental life drain will find it deeply rewarding to pilot.
