Overview
Spirit Squadron is a Spirit tribal deck that makes a steady stream of flyers. Millicent, Restless Revenant has affinity for Spirits, so she costs {1} less for each Spirit you control, and she has flying. Whenever Millicent or another nontoken Spirit you control dies or deals combat damage to a player, you create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying.
The 99 cards are 33 creatures, 1 planeswalker, 8 artifacts, 9 enchantments, 7 instants, 6 sorceries and 35 lands. 23 of the creatures are Spirits, with lords such as Drogskol Captain, Supreme Phantom and Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens, and token makers such as Hanged Executioner, Priest of the Blessed Graf and Field of Souls. The deck also has cards that need a Spirit to work, such as Spectral Arcanist, Nebelgast Herald and Breath of the Sleepless.
Key Cards
Playing the Deck
The early game is about cheap Spirits and mana. Spectral Sailor, Remorseful Cleric, Shacklegeist, Rattlechains and Supreme Phantom are cheap flyers, and Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Azorius Signet, Marble Diamond, Sky Diamond and Azorius Locket help you cast Millicent. Bygone Bishop investigates when you cast cheap creatures.
The middle of the game is about building a flying army and using tap effects. Drogskol Captain and Supreme Phantom pump the team, Timin, Youthful Geist taps a creature at the beginning of each combat and Rhoda, Geist Avenger grows when opposing creatures become tapped, and Nebelgast Herald taps a creature whenever a Spirit enters. Haunted Library and Field of Souls make Spirits when creatures die, and Ethereal Investigator and Kami of the Crescent Moon draw cards.
The late game is about huge flyers and a sweeper that you control. Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens makes 3/3 flyers, Angel of Flight Alabaster returns Spirits from the graveyard, and Storm of Souls returns all creature cards from your graveyard as 1/1 Spirit flyers. Kirtar's Wrath and Fell the Mighty reset the board, and Flood of Tears returns all nonland permanents to hands.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: The deck has a high density of cheap flyers that are hard to block, strong lords and protection, and it makes tokens whenever things die. It also has solid interaction, including Swords to Plowshares, Arcane Denial, Imprisoned in the Moon, Darksteel Mutation and Ghostly Prison.
Weaknesses: The deck relies on Spirits, so a sweeper can undo a lot of work, though its token makers and Storm of Souls help it recover. Most of the creatures are small, and the deck is two colours with a lot of double-coloured costs, so a slow start leaves it exposed to fast opponents.
