Overview
Wretched Ranks plays a resource-positive sacrifice loop at its core. Gisa taps and sacrifices a nontoken creature to create X 2/2 Zombie tokens where X equals that creature's power. In a deck stocked with large, expendable creatures and token doublers, a single activation creates five or more bodies. Those bodies are then either sacrificed again for more tokens or grown into a threatening army through the deck's lord suite.
The payoffs for the sheer volume of Zombies are stacked. Endless Ranks of the Dead doubles your Zombie count each upkeep, creating an exponential curve that quickly overwhelms removal. Death Baron and Cemetery Reaper pump the entire army and add keywords. Diregraf Colossus grows whenever a Zombie enters and creates additional tokens when you cast Zombie spells. The deck has a snowball quality where the fifth or sixth Zombie entering the battlefield creates more value than the first four combined.
Key Cards
Playing the Deck
Establish a mana base through Arcane Signet, Charcoal Diamond, and Mind Stone in the opening turns. Gisa requires five mana and a creature in play to activate, so the early game is about deploying cheap Zombies that both advance the tribe count and serve as future fodder. Cryptbreaker provides early card draw while creating a Zombie body. Carrion Feeder offers a free sacrifice outlet that grows with each use. Gravecrawler is a persistent threat that recasts itself from the graveyard as long as you control a Zombie.
The mid game begins when Gisa lands alongside at least one large creature. A single Gisa activation sacrificing a creature with four or more power creates enough Zombie tokens to trigger Diregraf Colossus, power up Soulless One, and begin the Endless Ranks doubling curve simultaneously. Protect the exponential engine at this stage — removal that hits Endless Ranks at five or six Zombies prevents the situation where the doubling becomes irreversible within two upkeeps.
The late game is attrition overwhelm. No opponent can answer twenty Zombies with lords on the field by the time the Endless Ranks curve peaks. Mutilate functions as a one-sided wrath when you control more swamp-sourced lands than anyone else. God-Eternal Bontu provides a final burst of sacrifice value and card draw. Josu Vess kicked creates eight additional Zombie tokens as a finishing move that ends games from any position.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths: The exponential token generation through Endless Ranks of the Dead creates boards that cannot be answered through conventional removal. The lord suite means even the baseline 2/2 tokens grow into genuine threats. The sacrifice loop has a built-in redundancy: even after a wrath, Gisa immediately rebuilds the board by sacrificing one surviving creature.
Weaknesses: The strategy depends heavily on Gisa surviving to activate. She costs five mana and has no built-in protection, making her vulnerable to repeated removal that taxes resources. The deck also has limited interaction on the stack and no mass exile — an opponent who answers Gisa before the Zombie army reaches critical mass can repeatedly slow the engine without it becoming self-sustaining.
